Choose right template for your blog. Consider web color scheme all throughout, use tri-color. Also, think through standard font style and size as well - must be readable. Use only bold, italic and or colored text for content emphasis.
It's not necessarily to put more widgets because some of the plugin sites have robots and cheat scripts. Content wise - blog about things you are interested in or know you well. And remember, so cool to be unique.
